Heeding the international call to remember Omar Aziz on the 12th anniversary of his death, we are excited to announce a webinar on the topic of his legacy and the future of Syria. This comes at a crucial moment in the history of the Syrian people. Barely two months ago the regime of Bashar al-Assad was brought down.
Omar Aziz (Abu Kamel) was a Syrian and anarchist revolutionary who participated in the early days of the uprising in his country. Namely, Aziz helped to organize neighborhood based self-managed councils in Damascus. In a short tract theorizing the role and impact of these councils, he observed that:
“The revolution has transformed individual humans by opening up new horizons in their lives, particularly once they were sure that confrontation was the way to gain their freedom and that by continuing on this path they would find new possibilities for tomorrow. By developing new ways of defining themselves rich with innovative, inventive power, they were able to overcome the smothering individualism of a half-century of authoritarian rule”
